wetpaint Wetpaint is a hosted online wiki. Wetpaint can be found on www.wetpaint.com. This wiki is free to use, and very easy to use. Wetpaint is actually one of the best looking wikis out there. It has all the basic wiki features like WYSIWYG editing, image upload, attachment upload, history, RSS feeds, adding pages and watching of pages. These basic wiki features are complemented with some features like tagging of pages, instantly emailing pages, and the use of templates for pages. There are also some good overview pages.

I think that this wiki is very good and looks stable. However, to use Wetpaint in an enterprise setting the basic offering will have to be altered. Large companies need highly customisable software to integrate into the existing systems. Wetpaint is also less suitable for larger organisations because they only offer a hosted wiki. If there is a possibility to license the software it will be much more interesting. Another feature that might be important within an enterprise is the integration of the user authentication. Last and not least, large corporates do not like Google adds on their platforms.

Wetpaint will be very suitable for smaller and relatively autonomous teams within these organisations. Because the Wetpaint site can be made private and viewable only by invited members it is a good tool for teams. The site can be made in a matter of minutes, so there will be no delays in the process. Because of its intuitive and easy-to-use design all the teammembers will be able to contribute quickly. The only disadvantage is that you will still have the Google Ads which can be annoying.

It is clear that Wetpaint was originally developed for private use and not for use in an enterprise setting but, as I mentioned above, there are still some good business opportunities for Wetpaint.

Pros

  • easy to use
  • lots of features
  • possibility to use statistics like Sitemeter and Google Analytics
  • intuitive
  • tagging incuded
  • instantly email a page
  • possible to use an own url
  • possible to make the site private and only accessible for invited members
  • integrated spelling checker

Cons

  • annoying Google Ads in the wiki and it is not possible to switch it off
  • search does not work very well, I tried to search for a part of a title and for a keyword, but they did not appear in the results.
  • originally a hosted service, the possiblities for licensing are not clear
  • not possible to write in code, so the more technical user will see this as a disadvantage

In the future we will post reviews of all the wikis out there.

  1. Thanks for taking the time to review Wetpaint. I think you hit the points that make Wetpaint a great collaborative solution for groups. Wetpaint has always intended its service to be used outside the firewalls of an enterprise. However that doesn’t preclude an enterprise customer from taking advantage of Wetpaint. Enterprise customers such as T-Mobile, CBS, HTC, and others who want to activate their most passionate consumers around their brands use Wetpaint. To them, hosting of the application matters little as long as it can seamlessly integrate into their external user experience. Check out http://csiwiki.cbs.com to see a great example of how a Wetpaint site can site outside the firewall and meet the needs of a business as well as everyday internet user.
